Chicago police recruit shot in Lincoln Square during possible carjacking attempt, alderperson says

The man, 21, is in good condition at a hospital, police said.


A shooting that wounded a Chicago police recruit may have been the result of an attempted carjacking early Tuesday in Lincoln Square, according to an alderperson. His passenger, also a recruit, was not injured during the attack which happened while the two were off duty and not in uniform. The wounded recruit, a 21-year-old man, was behind the wheel of a car traveling west on the 2600 block of West Gunnison Street when someone fired shots, hitting him in the back and causing him to crash into a parked car about 12:15 a.m., according to Chicago police.The wounded recruit was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition. A 24-year-old man, who was a passenger and also a recruit, was not hurt, police said. Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th) told the Sun-Times the driver was potentially targeted in an attempted carjacking while he was dropping off the other recruit. “It wasn’t targeted at any individual. It wasn’t targeted at CPD,” Vasquez said, adding that the recruits “were plainclothes and off-duty.”No one is in custody and Area 3 detectives are investigating.
