Warmer weather is coming to NYC, with highs possibly reaching the 60s

After a rainy stretch later this week, forecasters say a weekend warm-up could bring the city its first real taste of spring.

Sunshine is on the way to the New York City area, with temperatures expected to reach around 60 degrees by the end of the weekend.

But New Yorkers will have to get through some rain first. The National Weather Service is forecasting showers and cloudy skies through the end of the week, with sunshine returning Sunday and continuing into early next week.

A fast-moving and relatively weak weather system is moving through the area, bringing rain and cloudy skies for the remainder of the week, according to Jay Engle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New York.

“We may get pockets of sunshine, but unfortunately, we are going to be unsettled over the next few days,” he said. “Especially through the first half of the weekend, most of the time we’ll have clouds and periods of showers moving.”

And while the possibility of more snowfall later this month is rare, it’s not unheard of.

“Sometimes we get [snow] as late as early April, so it’s not safe to say that yet, but I think the consistent winter temperatures and the consistent cold that we’ve experienced look to be a thing of the past,” Engle said. “But we always run the risk of snapping back a few days.”

The New York metropolitan area received record-breaking snowfall over the past few weeks as back-to-back winter storms led to a citywide travel ban and shuttered classrooms.

Dozens of people, including some living in private residences, died due to the wintry conditions, according to city officials.
