Sibling charged with fatally shooting two brothers, setting house on fire in Highland Park

Jeffrey Austwick, 54, is charged in the shooting deaths of Marc and John Austwick on Wednesday, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday.


A man has been charged with the shooting deaths of his two brothers in suburban Highland Park. Jeffrey Austwick, 54, faces two counts of murder in the shooting deaths of Marc Austwick, 63, of Lake Forest, and John Austwick, 60, of Mundelein, according to Christopher Covelli, deputy chief of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.Early Wednesday, emergency crews responded to a residential fire in the 1700 block of Park Avenue West and found two men outside the home with “suspicious injuries,” according to Covelli.The men were pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy determined both died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County coroner’s office.An early investigation has indicated the three brothers went to the home to discuss the property. Their mother, who owned the house, had died recently, Covelli said.Jeffrey is accused of shooting Marc and John, then setting the house on fire and fleeing the area, according to Covelli.An arrest warrant for Jeffrey was issued the day of the shootings. He was arrested Friday morning at a park in St. Louis and remains in custody in that city, awaiting an initial court hearing, police said.
