Authorities have identified two 18-year-olds who died in a car crash on the Eisenhower Expressway early Sunday when one of them was reportedly changing a flat tire.Shealyn M. Sherwood, of Hoffman Estates, and Erik C. Cox, of Rolling Meadows, were killed in the wreck in the outbound lanes near Damen Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.The crash involved two vehicles around 3 a.m., according to Illinois State Police. State police said one of the victims was a pedestrian who was outside the vehicle at the time of the crash.Cox’s family told NBC Chicago the teen was changing a flat tire on the shoulder of the expressway when he was hit. He was driving home when he got a flat tire, his legal guardian, Fernando Chavarria, .“He was a gentle giant. He was a big kid and very intelligent,” Chavarria told NBC Chicago.Cox had graduated from Rolling Meadows High School two weeks earlier and planned to study graphic design at Columbia College Chicago, the station reported.Sherwood was a recent graduate of Schaumburg High School, the Daily Herald .Three other people were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries, state police said.Westbound lanes of the highway were closed until about 7:45 a.m.
