Sales of electricEVEVOBREV vehicles in Britain have taken off in recent years. The number of s has gone from fewer than 4,000 just over a decade ago to more than 975,000, roughly one in every 34 cars. Lately, however, growth has stalled. Has the market hit a pothole or a roadblock?In 2023 s’ share of the car market fell for the first time since they first emerged in showrooms, slipping to 16.5% of new sales, down from 16.6% the prior year. The Office for Budget Responsibility (), the government’s fiscal watchdog, says s will now account for 38% of new car sales in 2027, compared with its previous forecast of 67%. Having sated demand from early adopters, cracking the mass market is proving tougher.
