BRITAIN APPEARSOECD to be in the grip of a . In the past decade no European country has seen a greater increase in the use of antidepressants; now only the Portuguese and Icelanders are popping more of the pills (see chart 1, showing European members of the ). Around 4.5m Britons were in contact with mental-health services in 2021-22, a rise of almost 1m in five years.
